Stand with HCA healthcare workers: informational picket August 6

SEIU Local 1107 members at Sunrise Hospital are picketing Thursday, August 6 for safe staffing, competitive wages, and respect at work. Local 1224 members are invited to show up.

On Thursday, August 6, healthcare workers at HCA hospitals are taking their fight public. SEIU Local 1107 is holding an informational picket outside Sunrise Hospital, and Local 1224 members who can be there are encouraged to stand with them.

The details

Thursday, August 6 · 4:00–8:00 p.m. PT

Sunrise Hospital, 3186 S. Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89109 — outside the main hospital, at the corner. The flyer directs participants to meet up near the Denny's. A rally and program begin at 6:00 p.m. RSVP through SEIU Nevada's event page.

What they are picketing for

The three demands on the flyer are short, and any VA employee will recognize every one of them: safe staffing, competitive wages, and respect in the workplace. Different employer, same fight. Short staffing burns out the people who stay and puts patients at risk, and that is as true at Sunrise as it is at the Medical Center.

An informational picket is not a strike. Nobody walks off the job and no care is interrupted. It is a public show of strength while bargaining continues — a way for workers to tell the community and the employer, in daylight and in numbers, what is happening at the bargaining table.

If you go

SEIU's framing for the campaign is "Exceptional care deserves an exceptional contract," and their ask of supporters is short:

  • RSVP first. Sign up on the Mobilize page so the organizers have a headcount going in.
  • Wear purple. It is SEIU's color and it is what makes a line read as a union line in photos and on the news.
  • Bring a coworker. Numbers are the entire point of an informational picket.
  • Come at 6:00 if you can only come once. The line runs the full four hours, but the program and rally are at 6:00 p.m.
  • Need an accommodation? SEIU asks that you reply to your registration email to confirm requirements or ask questions.
